Forever Femme Superbalist Picks

Photo Taken from Spree.co.za

Embracing our femininity as empowered and powerful females in a "Louder for the patriarchal men and women at the back" kind of way has been a long time coming. Feminism is causing disruption and women everywhere are turning the volume up for the people in the back. It's both invigorating and empowering to be in an era of time where women are saying "Enough is Enough".

Fashion's played its fair share in this with feminist statement T-Shirts making their way to the list of trends among 2018. Upon looking for a gift for someone dear to my heart, I stumbled across Superbalist's "Forever Femme" picks from the various brands they have and thought it'd be  great to showcase my faves.

A fierce and femme look is a great way to showcase your femininity in a way that says: "I'm a bad-ass boss babe, don't play with me". ☝πŸ’

Slaying At This Adulting Thing: The Finance Edition

Adulting is hard and you best believe that because I'm not the only 20 - something year old who has said this - there are quite a few of us who have. So listen, I'm about to break it down for you so that maybe you have it a little easier than i have lately. In this post, I will breaking it down into the financial aspect of adulting. I'll have follow-up posts that speak about school, friendships and relationships.

Of course I've got to start with the cash money because chances are you're currently not handling your finances in the right way. Our generation is all for splurging over the weekend, living our best lives and not worrying about a single cent - unless you consider hustling Mc Donald's money as a worry (I did this once after a night out clubbing (it's safe to say I've got this hustle thing on lock).

My Scars Don't Define Me, I AM CLAUDINE πŸ‘Š

I Stumbled across Claudine when I was casually going through my Facebook timeline. A mutual friend of ours had shared a post where she had uploaded a beautiful picture of herself, with make-up on, smiling. It wasn't the scars she had that captivated me but rather the caption she had put. I stared at the post for a while, in awe at how confident and full of self-love she is.

We all have our own stories to tell, stories of physical, emotional or mental scars. Make no mistake, our scars do not define us but rather how we overcome them does. Inspired by Claudine's positive approach to her scars, I decided that I had to interview her for the blog. See, our scars do not have to be like claudines' - physical burn scars, perhaps we're battling with self-love because of the extra fat around our waist or because of the shade of your skin regardless, we can learn a lot from Claudine, her confidence & her self-love

Intern At Night, Self-Made Business Woman By Day

I live within a generation that is tired of working for corporate companies and interning for a meager R3000. My generation is all about acquiring entrepreneurial skills and becoming their own bosses. It's not just young millennial men who are hustling but women too. There are numerous millennial babes who are grinding just as hard as men if not, harder. One such boss babe is Kgaugelo Dolamo. Founder of Dolamo Hair.

She's a hospitality intern at night and a business woman by day. How does she balance everything at once? Seriously .. I'm struggling here. She recently registered Dolamo Hair, a business she started of glaming babes up with fresh hairstyles for their matric dance and for slaying in their daily lives. This babes is making serious moves. She caters to a wide variety of women, she does braids, dreads, weaves and her business is not only limited to the ladies but the gents too. She's a woman of many talents who endeavors to learn and do more while she's still young. So, naturally I HAD TO interview her for the blog because like ... I really want to know how she does it! well, the answers are down below πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

Lessons Learned From Driving School

I Initially wanted to do my drivers license in automatic because when my dad taught me how to drive with manual, he failed miserably. Simply because he is the worst teacher ever. He''s impatient and was changing the gears for me , which technically is not how you drive. My dad enrolled me into diving school, for a vigorous everyday lesson at 11:00, I was practicing with a manual car. πŸš•πŸš—

During my evaluation the instructor assessed that I could drive but that I had a few things to work on. He didn't mention what but it was basically my steering, my observation - which i feel is unnecessary actually - and then the usual parking and stuff. He was a great teacher, extremely patient and we'd laugh at a lot of things together. It didn't feel formal, technical or strict type of vibes - I could be myself and that's what I liked.

June Letter From The Blog Editor

Photo by Papaver rhoeas on Unsplash

It's June... yay 😐 - said only a bunch of people that have achieved a lot within the first half of the year and are super-jetting, positively into the remainder of the year. Not to say that I haven't accomplished a fair amount of goals and milestones. I'm just disappointed at my habit of procrastination and at the fact that flight tickets are crazy expensive during long weekends.

I haven't had the time to sit down and deeply analyse the last six months per say, but I do have a general idea of what needs to change and what plans (that have beeen in the pipeline) need to be finally implemented.

Dear Black Parents: Our Perspective on Black Tax

Black tax needs no introduction because of its popularity amongst black people. For those of you that don’t know what black tax is here’s a definition: “the financial responsibility of providing for extended family” There are a lot of differing opinions amongst millennials when it comes to black tax because some are for it and some are against it. Another factor that results in a difference of opinion is circumstance.

Skin-Care Tips No One Tells You About

The reality is that we don't all have amazing skin and that's OK, because we're not all going to have amazing skin. You might think that from my stand point - blessed to have never had pimples/acne - that I don't have the slightest clue on what it feels like to struggle with problematic skin. False. I have skin problems of my own and I don't always get complimented for my skin - Mostly my smile and dimples.

I know a handful of babes who go all out in watching YouTube tutorials of skin-care routines, featuring babes with the most amazing skin obtained from oats/fruit masks, skin-oils and a handful of beauty products. I feel like there are unspoken skin-care tips that people don't realise when it comes to finding the perfect skin-care routine for themselves

The Best Time to Buy Flight Tickets ✈✈

There’s a saying that goes: “You make your money in Joburg and you spend it all in Cape Town” and perhaps this is why the Johannesburg to Cape Town flight route is one of the busiest routes in the world. I'm not entirely shocked as this is my most frequent route. The highest I've ever paid for a flight ticket on this route amounts to 1.9k (for one ticket 😒) and it definitely dented my wallet. Needless to say I was quite broke for the duration of that month - It was April.

I thought that booking flights well ahead of time was all I needed to save some money when it Came to mini-vacays over the weekend (I learnt my lesson the hard way) but, I've stumbled across even more helpful tips.Timing is key, knowing when the best time to buy an airline ticket  is can save you a lot of unnecessary heartache that comes with booking a 1.9K flight ticket.

Balancing my 9-5 with my 5-9

This year I really underestimated the pressure and stress that comes with balancing school with work. People/I make it look effortless when in reality it’s a bucket-load of work, stress and exhaustion.

I changed universities this year and adjusting to Varsity college with UNISA’s perceptions did not go well. I was introduced to something called turn-it-in / safe assign and got issued with a warning for plagiarism – all in one semester. I now participate in online tests and tasks and the workload isn’t just the prescribed textbook, lecturer slides and extra resources but also the learning units underneath each module on the online platform. WORK, WORK, WORK and more work.

May Letter From The Blog Editor

Can you believe we're literally a month away from being halfway through 2018. Scary isn't it? For me it's because in June I need to have a little sit down with myself and assess how I've progressed throughout the +- 6 months of the year. Check my goals, my achievements and milestones. it's basically going to be a reflective period. If things need to be adjusted they will be and if I need to reality-check myself, I will do so.

Overall I'm quite okay with how everything in my life is going, even though I'm neck-deep with school and the stress it causes me. My positiviy reassures me that I WILL πŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺkick ass when it comes to examinations - If I stick to my study timetable then everything should be okay. My goal is to basically pass the first semester. I'm not being unrealistic and expecting distinctions, I just want to pass. The distinctions part will come in second semester.

The Boss Babe Guide To Curbing Unemployment πŸ’ΈπŸ’°

Unemployment is a real thing. SO, take a few moments to appreciate the job you have right now (like me) and stop complaining... unless you work for a really crappy boss and your job just sucks.

There are a lot of millennials looking for a job to cop the 5 year experience that the Junior content producer job posting says is a crucial requirement. None of us wants to be in a position where we're just enjoying the student life and the only job we can land after university is an internship that pays R3000 (They don't all pay this amount so relax) and you still have to pay off your NSFAS debt. Hectic. Imagine slaving for a whole 6 months, living off of R3000 which barely covers your needs? - unless you stay with your parents. Even so, be grateful you scored a paying internship because some internships don't even pay.

Why Airbnb is the #1 App For Traveling

It hit me last weekend, when I was in Cape Town Attending my cousin's graduation, that Accommodation is probably the most stressful thing that has to be checked off of your travel/mental checklist (If you have one). I've always had the difficulty of deciding which site to use in terms of accommodation and I've always preferred Hotel apartments as opposed to your standard no-stove hotels. I'm one who gets tired of having takeaways and  eventually long for home cooked meals. Try staying in a hotel for an entire 5 days with nothing but take away's and restaurant food being shoved down your throat ... TERRIBLE.

#COSMOHustle 2018 Event Highlights

So when Cosmopolitan Magazine announced  the #COSMOHustle2018 workshop that was centered around their influencer edition, I was definitely captivated. I decided to get myself a ticket that VERY night, because a little birdy told me that the tickets would sell out FAST! - and they did.

The event was nothing short of immaculate. It was well-planned and served it’s purpose in educating, inspiring and empowering the ladies that were at the event.

Why Roco Mamas ROCKS!

Who doesn't love a good, juicy, tender and scrumptious burger?? - minus the pickles of course, because ... eew.😣 If you were to ask me what food I'd be happy to eat for the rest of my life, while stuck on a deserted island, I'm 110%sure I'll say Burgers, because - to me- it doesn't get better than that. It's the perfect form of junk food and can be tailored to suit your dietary needs (Veggie burgers, vegan burgers etc-etc). whenever I think of hot days and chilled-vibes, almost 4/5 times
I think burgers and a good beer. Pizza would be an alternative but that's a blog post for another day.

Steven Obi Emedo | Photographer

I'm a huge fan of creatives, purely because my creative side dominates the math, numbers and calculations side of me. Feminism is something I've recently started to dig deep into, so to say, and that's mainly where my creative craves sway towards. I don't exclude any other creative categories outside of feminism but my interest really lies in feminism, patriarchy and inequity.

I came across a number of Steven Obi Emedo's pictures on Facebook. His photography, for me , really captures the beauty, strength and resilience of women in a standard, traditional portrait form. So I decided to ask him a couple of questions regarding his photography.

Lebo Makwela, Poet

"Poetry is something that really intrigues me. It's in the way a couple of words can mean so much. It highlights punctuation at its best and speaks volumes while being modest with word usage. Writing poetry is a craft, it is art at its best. Lebo Makwela, she defines herself as crazy, calculating and creative."

"Other than poetry, I love dancing and exploring other creative sides to myself. I’ve found happiness in all art forms, I’ve found it to be extremely powerful. I am the founder of the Facebook page Lebo The Creative. It is a platform where I share my writing. I’m a person who loves they own space, the silence helps me get lost in my thoughts."

As a brand ambassador, it's my duty to share my experiences and thoughts on this brand and of course, I need to try the products out first before doing so. I received my travel kit a while ago and I also decided to make use of the 50% off Black Friday Special on selected products. I purchased the Deep Cleansing Shampoo, Cleansing Milk, Herb Infused Oil, Conditioning Creme and Intense Hair Masque.

February Letter From The Blog Editor

First of all, Maradona πŸ’ƒπŸ’ƒ. I'm obsessed with this song and I don’t even feel ashamed of putting it on repeat the whole damn night and the next morning when I'm hyping myself up for the day. It’s a great song  and if you don’t know it yet, give it a listen here. Its important you give it a listen because, it's basically the tone of this months' letter. Vibrant, fun and colorful. πŸ’£πŸ’¦πŸ‘…

It’s like the first two months of the year really freak people out. Januwworry for its lack of money and Februworry for our lack of other halves! RELAX!✋ It's not everything to have someone do something for us on valentines day - although I must admit its nice - , It really isn't the end of the world and you wont stay single.

No repeats!

So your girl did the most and managed to get an interview with the creative, determined and outspoken, Shalima Mkongi, one of the female actresses who act on the show! I asked her a few questions about herself, her craft and any advice she'd give to fellow babes trying to make it in the entertainment industry!

Salsa Mexican Grill

My sister is a HUGE Mexican food fanatic and when KFC released their version of a (questionable) burrito - I’m not a hater of KFC though - , she was sooo excited to try it out. Only to be dismally disappointed (the chicken still good throughπŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹).

So anyway, moral of the story is don’t go to a restaurant that sells sushi and expect to get the best chicken in the history of chicken πŸ—πŸ—

January Letter From The Blog Editor

I'm probably late with the whole "New year new me" stuff, I'm not an avid believer in it either but it wouldn’t hurt to mention it , partly because I have it to owe for the re-branding of my blog.

See, towards the end of 2017, my life took a turn for the worst (maybe I'm being a bit word-dramatic but the feeling you get when you've dropped your ice-cream without even getting to lick it just once, is exactly how I felt.) Anyway, I lost, essentially my best friend (not through Death) and I went back to my space of negativity, the space I was in when my twin brother passed away, in 2015.
